Favorable conditions for cleaning and preparing the soil: agrometeorological situation in agricultural regions of Russia.

In Russia, the harvest continues. The weather in the European part has been warm and dry, while in the Asian part it has been cold and rainy. The forecast for the second decade of September: favorable harvesting of row crops, but drought is possible in the Chernozem region.

11 September 2024 11 September 2024

European part

In the North-Western, Central and Volga Federal Districts, warm and dry weather was registered. The maximum air temperature reached 25…29°C, and in the southern tip of the Central Federal District – 30…32°C. The minimum air temperature dropped to 4…10°C in most regions, and to 1…2°C in the northeast, east, and southeast of the territory. In some areas of the Orenburg, Ulyanovsk, Kostroma, and Arkhangelsk regions, Perm Krai, Udmurt Republic, Komi, and Bashkortostan, the temperature dropped to -2…0°C. The average decade air temperature exceeded the norm mostly by 2–4°C, except in the east of the Orenburg region where it was 2°C below the norm. There was no precipitation, except in some areas in the northwest, northeast, and east of the territory where 1–8 mm of precipitation fell.

Harvesting of grains, potatoes, rapeseed, sugar beets, soybeans, and flax continued as usual, and sunflower harvesting began. Agrometeorological conditions for harvesting, as well as sowing and germination of winter crops, were favorable. In areas where soil drought still persisted, conditions for sowing winter crops were not very good, sometimes even poor. However, in fields sown in August, winter crops sprouted, and their condition was good.

In the Southern and North Caucasus Federal Districts, as well as in the Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, hot weather continued (up to 30…35°C during the day). The expected decade air temperature was 2–4°C above the norm. Most of the region had no precipitation, except for the Krasnodar Krai, some areas of the Rostov region, the Republic of Crimea, the western part of the Stavropol Krai, and the North Caucasus Republics, where a significant amount of rain fell (15-25 mm, in some places - 40–50 mm or more). The conditions for completing the harvest of late crops slightly eased after these rains, and the conditions for preparing the soil for sowing winter crops improved. In some areas of the North Caucasus, rains persisted for 4–5 days, making harvesting difficult.

Harvesting of late grains, sunflower, sugar beets, vegetables, and fruit crops continued. In most days, the conditions for harvesting were favorable. Due to soil moisture deficit, agrometeorological conditions for soil preparation and sowing winter crops were not very good in most regions.

Asian part

In the agricultural regions of the Ural and Siberian Federal Districts, unusually cold weather prevailed. Almost everywhere, the average decade air temperature was 1–2°C below the norm. The maximum air temperature was 23…24°C in the Urals and southeastern parts of Eastern Siberia, and in other areas, it was 17…20°C. The minimum air temperature dropped to 3…8°C almost everywhere, and in some regions, such as Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, Kemerovo, Irkutsk regions, Mountain Altai, and Tuva, it dropped to -2…0°C.

Harvesting of spring grains and sowing of winter crops for the 2025 harvest continued. Field work conditions in the Urals were good or satisfactory. However, in some agricultural areas, the execution of these works was hindered by rains (5–15 mm of precipitation for the decade, more than 20 mm in some areas of the Tyumen region).

In most areas of the Siberian Federal District, as in the previous decade, rain fell on more than half of the days of the decade. Due to frequent and prolonged rains, the upper 10-centimeter layer of soil became heavily waterlogged and characterized as running. In some areas, this condition reached the stage of "soil waterlogging during harvest and fodder preparation". Harvesting operations were suspended, grain and annual grasses bent, and the bent cereals and potatoes were heavily affected by fungal diseases. In grain-growing areas of the Tomsk region, over 15 thousand hectares of harvest perished due to prolonged soil waterlogging. In the Novosibirsk region, sprouting of spring wheat grains was registered, and in Altai, sunflowers were rotting due to rain and high humidity.

In most agricultural regions of the Far Eastern Federal District, the weather was unstable. Except for the far south, frosts of -5…-1°C were observed everywhere, which could damage spring crops on unharvested fields. The maximum air temperature reached 27…30°C, and in the northern agricultural areas – 20…25°C. The average decade air temperature was close to the norm, while in the southern regions of the Transbaikal Krai, it was 2°C above the norm.

In some southern areas of Khabarovsk and Primorsky regions, rains lasted for 4–5 days, worsening the conditions for harvesting and completing the harvest of late planted crops.

Agrometeorological forecast for the second decade of September 2024

European part

Favorable conditions are expected for harvesting late crops in the European part of Russia. The chernozem zone can expect dry and very warm weather, leading to an increase in soil drought. Rain is expected in Crimea, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, and in the North Caucasus, improving conditions for preparing the soil for sowing winter crops.

Agrometeorological conditions for soil preparation and sowing of winter cereals for the 2025 harvest will be satisfactory, although due to precipitation deficit, conditions for crop emergence may not be very good in some fields.

Asian part

In the Ural Federal District and Western Siberia, conditions for harvesting are expected to be satisfactory, and in the main areas of winter sowing work will be improved.

In Eastern Siberia, conditions for harvesting spring crops will not be very good due to rain and high air and soil humidity.

In the southeast of the Far Eastern Federal District, conditions for harvesting and completing the harvest of late planted crops will slightly improve.
