In the autumn of last year, agriculture in this region sowed around 2.9 million hectares of winter crops, the predominant ones being cereals.
Currently, experts in the agricultural sector, working at the regional, district, and farm levels, regularly monitor the condition of winter crop plantings.
"According to our data, almost 86% of winter crops have successfully sprouted in the fields of the Don," said Deputy Governor of the Rostov Region and Minister of Agriculture and Food Konstantin Rachalovsky. "In some areas, the lack of autumn precipitation had a negative impact on the growth of winter crops. Low soil permeability and unsatisfactory results are observed in those areas where drought lasted until November. However, the precipitation that fell in December-January will have a positive effect on the plantings, as it provided the soil with a sufficient moisture supply. The further development of winter crops will depend on weather conditions."
According to agricultural experts, even in areas affected by drought, seeds are mostly in moist soil, which contributes to the successful growth of the root system and embryos. The current state of the soil does not allow mold to develop on the plantings.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Don region notes that agricultural producers in the Rostov Region are actively preparing for the spring planting campaign, including preparing seeds of spring crops. According to the latest data, more than 59 thousand tons of seed material have already been prepared out of the required 130 thousand tons, which is about 45%. The quality control and preparation of seeds are carried out according to the established schedule of work of agricultural enterprises.
