The scale insect is a pest that attacks indoor plants, weakening them and ultimately leading to their death.
Signs of scale insect infestation include loss of leaves' shine, browning, and the appearance of sticky secretions. This insect sucks sap from leaves and stems, leading to the formation of yellowish or reddish-brown spots capable of causing the death of individual parts of the plant.
Here are a few ways to combat scale insects:
- Mechanical removal of pests can be done by dissolving household or tar soap in water and treating the plant leaves with this solution while simultaneously removing the insects. The use of folk remedies such as garlic, onion, or pepper infusions is also effective.
- To combat scale insects and mealybugs, approved chemical preparations or biological protection agents can be used, such as "Fitoverm". The treatment should be repeated after a week, as this preparation is effective only against adult individuals but does not affect the larvae.
The reproduction of these pests is slowed down by reducing air humidity and prolonged exposure to sunlight.
If you have found the pest, it is recommended to isolate the affected plant from other flowers, replace the soil in the pot, and thoroughly clean the place where the pot was located (windowsill, glass, shelf, walls).
