Minister of Agriculture Oksana Lut stated that Egypt is looking to increase purchases of Russian wheat. The statement was made during negotiations at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, as reported by the RIA Novosti news agency.
She noted that Egypt needs more wheat as it is a key product for them, and also due to the active population growth for various reasons. Therefore, they do not see any issues with it. If there are any obstacles, they will switch to other suppliers. She also pointed out that Turkey will remain a strategic partner for Russia in trade.
The volumes of mutual food supplies between Russia and Egypt have significantly increased in recent years. In 2023, the trade turnover grew by 6.6%. This growth is primarily based on a 10.6% increase in Russian exports.
Last year, Russia supplied about 70% of the total volume of wheat needed by Egypt. From January to April of the current year, Russia exported over 3.5 million tons of wheat, which is 20% more than in the same period the previous year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
