In the current year, Russia will reduce the collection of rye to 1.3 million tons, compared to 1.7 million tons in 2023. Interest in this crop is declining. Already now, the rye harvest has significantly decreased compared to 2002 when 7.1 million tons were harvested. In the following years, the amount of harvested rye fluctuated from 2.4 million tons in 2020 to 1.4 million tons in 2019, as indicated in the presentation of the Russian Union of Flour and Cereals Enterprises based on information from Interfax.
"This graph is a cause for concern and disappointment. It indicates that if we exclude seeds and industrial processing, the flour industry will only be able to rely on a maximum of 1 million tons of rye," said the union's president, Igor Sviridenko.
He noted that producers and millers do not consider there to be a rye shortage, as there is an inappropriate balance between demand and supply.
"Interest in this crop is decreasing: among farmers due to its unprofitability, as both yield and price are low. Flour producers, as well as bread producers, are also losing interest. But no one is raising alarm. Perhaps this is understandable. We have already lost many national cultures, as the proverb about 'boiled turnip' comes to mind. Who today still knows what a 'boiled turnip' is? Perhaps rye bread will become a rarity, available only in Russian cuisine restaurants," Sviridenko said.
However, conference participants note a persistent demand for rye bread in Russia, especially in the northwestern regions, where consumers cannot do without it. Rye flour from Belarus is supplied to these regions. Earlier, it conquered the Russian market due to prices not exceeding the price of rye, but now prices are rising.
The chairman of the board of directors of LLC "Agroprom" Arkadiy Gurevich, who has long headed the Union of Millers, predicts that by the end of next year, if the areas allocated for rye remain at the current level, rye collection in Russia may decrease to 1.2 million tons.
Currently, the market reflects the corresponding situation, affecting prices. According to "ProZerno" company data, on November 22, prices for food rye (EXW European Russia, incl. VAT) amounted to 12,765 rubles per ton, which is 120 rubles higher than the previous week. In October of the current year, the average price per ton of rye was 11,869 rubles, and in November 2023 - 7,060 rubles.
