Outstanding prospects for grain harvest in Canada unfolded before Bruce Burnett, an analyst at MarketsFarm, as a result of his journey across the Canadian prairies covering 3500 kilometers. The Western Producer delicately reports on this fascinating adventure.
Burnett did not hide his excitement and shared: "If the harvest period goes well, we can expect a crop close to a record this year on the prairies." He also noted that the situation is much better compared to last year, especially concerning durum wheat.
It is worth noting that durum yield estimates have increased by 18 bushels (12 centners/hectare) compared to last year, reaching 44 bushels/acre (29.59 centners/hectare). Following the preliminary estimate from Statistics Canada regarding the area and level of development, there is hope for a crop of 7.4 million tonnes. Burnett couldn't help but highlight that this is a "significant revival" in terms of durum crop yield.
Importantly, spring wheat yield is also very promising, expected to reach 57 bushels/acre (38.3 centners/hectare), exceeding last year's figures by 10 bushels (6.73 centners/hectare). This will set a new record for Western Canada. Forecasts suggest a harvest of 27.8 million tonnes of spring wheat, exceeding last year's figures by 3.4 million tonnes.
Bruce Burnett describes his surprise at the absence of diseases in spring wheat, especially considering the wet weather. He admits that he expected to see more diseased leaves, but fortunately, no such issues have been detected.
