In August of this year, China purchased Russian wheat worth $17.9 million, allowing Russia to rise to the third position in the list of leading suppliers after Canada and the USA. Russian barley exports increased by almost 400% in 8 months, as indicated in the documents of the State Customs Administration of the People's Republic of China, as reported by Interfax.
In August, China bought wheat from five countries, mostly from Canada ($56.3 million) and the USA ($24.7 million), as well as from Kazakhstan ($12.2 million) and Australia ($10.5 million).
Russian wheat exports in 8 months were twice as high as in the same period last year (by $8.9 million).
According to the State Customs Administration, barley exports to China in 8 months increased by 3.8 times compared to the previous year, reaching $125.3 million. The exports in August and July were similar - $12.9 million and $12.4 million respectively.
At the same time, Russian corn exports to China decreased by more than three times to $22.3 million from January to August 2023. In August of the current year, it was $1.4 million compared to $1.1 million in July.
As reported earlier, currently Russia can only supply spring wheat and barley to China. However, Russian experts believe that the greatest potential lies in winter wheat and barley. Russia is seeking permission to export these crops to the Chinese market.
The head of the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) Sergei Dankvert announced to journalists this week that negotiations on this matter are ongoing, but details have not been disclosed yet.
