In 2024, the National Commodity Exchange (NCE) recorded a growth in sugar exchange trading volume to 369.2 thousand tons, which exceeded the 2023 figure by 32% (279.1 thousand tons). The data was presented by the director of NCE, Sergey Naumov, at the international conference "Sugar Market in the CIS 2025". Monthly sugar transactions exceeded 30 thousand tons and reached a value of 1.75 billion rubles (approximately 20.6 million US dollars). Over-the-counter transactions were also noted, reaching up to 600 thousand tons per month, with an average volume of 6 thousand tons. This was reported by the "Interfax" agency.
The sugar exchange market began its formation in 2017, and in 2023, commodity auctions were added. Over 100 companies, including large and medium producers, participate in the auctions, with over 50 delivery points available. Since 2022, an off-exchange sugar index has been calculated in the Central Federal District (CFD), and since 2023, futures trading on this index started along with the daily index publications in three regions.
Starting from 2024, daily calculations of sugar exchange indexes began in the Central, Volga, and Southern Federal Districts. The CFD index includes 180.5 thousand tons of sugar, accounting for over 5% of the regional production (3.5 million tons), while 354 thousand tons, or around 10%, are included in the off-exchange index. These indexes together cover more than 15% of sugar production in the CFD region. From 2020 to 2024, the sugar trading volume on the exchange amounted to 1 million tons.
