In the upcoming 2025/26 season, sugar production is expected to reach between 6.2 and 6.8 million tons, with a slight increase in the areas where sugar beets are grown. This information was provided by the agricultural expert Evgeniy Ivanov from IKAR in an interview with "Agroinvestor". Currently, the current season is forecasted at 6.3 million tons, of which by February 27, 6.05 million tons had already been produced, including sugar obtained from syrup.
The Ministry of Agriculture expects an increase in the areas allocated for sugar beet cultivation in 2025 to 1.173 million hectares, compared to 1.169 million hectares in 2024. However, such growth is expected only in the Central Chernozem region (+5.2%), while in the Volga region and Altai, the areas may decrease by 2.9-4.4%. Evgeniy Ivanov believes that the overall increase in areas will be from 1 to 4%, especially in regions where plants have already completed the processing of the 2024 harvest earlier than usual. He also notes that Russia has unused capacities in the plants, and increasing the areas is possible with crop rotation compliance.
According to forecasts, the yield of sugar beets in 2025 will be average, as the previous winter was warm and low-snow. This may lead to soil moisture shortage and the need for additional plantings. At the same time, Russia already exports about 1 million tons of sugar annually and can cope with possible overproduction.
Earlier, the director of Sugar.ru, Vadim Gomoz, warned that sugar beet plantings may decrease due to high key rate, which hinders credit provision, as well as due to the proximity of beet growing regions to conflict zones.
It is expected that the costs of sugar beet cultivation this year will exceed 180-200 thousand rubles per hectare (2.1-2.3 thousand dollars), while in the previous season they amounted to 155-170 thousand rubles per hectare (1.8-2 thousand dollars).
