Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has set an ambitious goal - to double rapeseed production in the country. He announced this during a ceremony honoring agricultural workers at the "Dazhynki-2024" festival in Mosty, according to BELTA correspondent.
Highlighting the achievements of the Grodno region in agriculture, the President drew attention to the rapeseed harvest, which reached a record level this year. The gross harvest amounted to 287,000 tons with an average yield of 40 centners per hectare. "And just 30 years ago, we started with only six and a half centners!" he emphasized.
Alexander Lukashenko recalled that once no one believed in the role of rapeseed, and he personally persuaded people to grow it, even those who did not think strategically. The President called on scientists to develop domestic varieties of rapeseed, and they succeeded. "Today, Belarus is associated with endless yellow fields. When you drive, the country smells like honey. Rapeseed has become our second gold," he said.
In the President's opinion, the Grodno crystal bison filled with rapeseed oil adorns the exposition of the Palace of Independence, and this is a symbol of the present and future culture. Rapeseed is not only a food product but also animal feed, biodiesel, raw material for the confectionery and cosmetic industries, emphasized the Belarusian leader.
Belarus is currently among the top 10 world exporters of rapeseed oil. The country produces about 1 million tons of oil and sells it for over half a billion dollars annually. Additionally, Belarus exports seeds of its own production, which barely existed 25 years ago.
However, according to the President, the capacities of rapeseed oil production enterprises allow for a twofold increase in production. He noted that the product needs better advertising. Belarusians should consume rapeseed oil instead of olive oil. The President concluded that agricultural workers across the country should increase rapeseed production volumes at least twice. Rapeseed is our potential for export. As long as there is demand for the product, it needs to be produced and sold.
