Harvesting of oilseeds, including sunflower, in Kazakhstan has been completed. According to official data, the gross harvest exceeds last year's level by almost half. However, processors report a shortage of sunflower seeds and an increase in their prices. This information is reported by the APK News agency.
In the current season, 1,686.2 thousand tons of oilseeds have been harvested, which is 46% more than last year. The sunflower yield has increased by 35%, and the volume of last year's sunflower crop was 1.2 million tons. This makes the gross harvest of oilseeds this season equal to 3.2 million tons.
The Ministry of Agriculture notes that the population's supply of basic food products in Kazakhstan exceeds the demand several times. The production volume of sunflower oil is more than 670 thousand tons, while the demand is about 400 thousand tons. In the first 10 months of 2024, vegetable oil production increased by 10% to 604 thousand tons. However, global vegetable oil prices have sharply risen.
Sunflower oil prices in Kazakhstan are also increasing. The shortage of sunflower seeds and the rise in prices put pressure on the cost of oil. Since the beginning of the season, the price of sunflower seeds in Kazakhstan has increased by 30%. Producers also have to deal with a significant increase in expenses for utilities, energy sources, and logistics. All this affects the cost of producing finished products, and the profitability of oil refineries does not exceed 5% today.
Processors point out their inability to lower sunflower oil prices this season. Sunflower production in major producing countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and Argentina is decreasing. A global reduction in seed production is expected at the level of 8-9 million tons. Therefore, sunflower seed prices will continue to rise.
Nevertheless, this situation will allow sunflower producers to increase revenue, and in the next season, farmers will be able to expand the sown areas.
