High temperatures are threatening the grain crop in Moldova and Romania, experts warn of worsening yields.

High temperatures in April in Moldova contribute to the rapid growth of wheat, barley, and rapeseed crops, however, drought and lack of moisture threaten the yield.

A similar situation is observed in Romania: plants suffer from soil drought, which could lead to a significant decrease in wheat yield.

Unusually high April temperatures have contributed to the rapid growth of wheat, barley, and rapeseed crops in Moldova, which could have a negative impact on their yield and quality. This was stated by Boris Boîncean, a representative of the National Research and Breeding Center "Selection".

According to the expert, several factors, including lack of rainfall in the autumn period and high winter temperatures, have influenced the growth of winter grains.

"We entered spring with a drought, which is now clearly evident. Fields suffer from large cracks, lack of water, leading to stunted plants. If there is no rain, the situation may become critical," Boîncean said, adding that it is still unclear how frosts have affected the crops.

A similar situation is observed in Romania, where, according to meteorological data, moderate and severe soil drought may affect the winter wheat harvest on large areas. Farmers from Buzău county have already reported that grain crops in this region, covering more than 25 thousand hectares, may suffer from drought, leading to a decrease in yield by about 50% compared to the previous year.
