Record growth in durum wheat exports: Russia increased volumes 13 times

Russia has significantly increased its wheat exports for pasta production. According to Arkady Zlochevsky, the president of the Russian Grain Union, a ban on shipments could create problems for the production and export of this crop. The export growth has been positive, with shipment volumes increasing from 52,000 to 657,000 tons. The Ministry of Agriculture has proposed a ban on the export of hard wheat from December 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024. According to Zlochevsky, the export growth was facilitated by restrictions on grain duties, which affect the price of wheat.

During the current season, from July 1 to November 10, the Russian Federation has significantly increased its exports of durum wheat, which is actively used for the production of pasta. However, according to plans to ban the shipment of this grain abroad, serious problems may arise for the production and, indirectly, export of this precious crop, President of the Russian Grain Union Arkady Zlochevsky is sure.

“The unconditional growth was positive for durum wheat shipments. In the period from July to November 10 last year, distribution volumes amounted to 52 thousand tons, in the current season for the same period - 657 thousand tons. Apparently, it is for this reason that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food adopted decision to ban exports,” Zlochevsky said during a press conference held on Monday in the Russian capital.

As is known, the Ministry of Agriculture proposed to ban the export of durum wheat from December 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024.

According to Zlochevsky, export growth was facilitated by the existing restriction on grain duties, which are calculated based on the indicative price for all wheat. As a result, the share of the duty significantly affected the price of durum wheat.
