During the current season, from July 1 to November 10, the Russian Federation has significantly increased its exports of durum wheat, which is actively used for the production of pasta. However, according to plans to ban the shipment of this grain abroad, serious problems may arise for the production and, indirectly, export of this precious crop, President of the Russian Grain Union Arkady Zlochevsky is sure.
“The unconditional growth was positive for durum wheat shipments. In the period from July to November 10 last year, distribution volumes amounted to 52 thousand tons, in the current season for the same period - 657 thousand tons. Apparently, it is for this reason that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food adopted decision to ban exports,” Zlochevsky said during a press conference held on Monday in the Russian capital.
As is known, the Ministry of Agriculture proposed to ban the export of durum wheat from December 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024.
According to Zlochevsky, export growth was facilitated by the existing restriction on grain duties, which are calculated based on the indicative price for all wheat. As a result, the share of the duty significantly affected the price of durum wheat.
