The Ministry of Agriculture of France has once again lowered its estimate for the production of soft wheat in the country for the current year 2024. Instead of the projected 26.32 million tons, they now expect a production of 25.78 million tons. This represents a 27% decrease compared to last year and is one of the lowest harvest levels in the past 40 years, starting from 1986, according to Reuters.
It is known that rainy weather since the beginning of autumn in France has slowed down the sowing process, negatively affected plant growth, and increased the number of plant diseases.
In light of this, the Ministry has also reduced its estimate for barley production this year to 10.05 million tons, compared to last month when the estimate was 10.40 million tons. This reduction represents an 18% decrease compared to last year's result. Their projected winter barley production will be 7 million tons (a 28% decrease year on year), and spring barley - 3.05 million tons (an 18% increase).
Regarding corn, the harvest of which will begin shortly, the Ministry has raised its projected estimate for the current year 2024. They now expect a production of 14.39 million tons, compared to last month's forecast of 14.01 million tons. This increase represents an 11% rise compared to last year.
The rapeseed production for the current year 2024 is estimated at 3.95 million tons, slightly exceeding last month's forecast of 3.94 million tons, and decreasing by almost 8% compared to last year.
