In the area of the Astrakhan region, a plant "Tomarina" is being launched for the production of tomato paste with an area of 650 hectares. After the construction of the plant, it is planned to annually produce 230,000 tons of tomatoes and 28,000 tons of tomato paste. In the current year, a tomato paste production plant named "Tomarina" is planned to be launched in the Krasnoyarsky district of the Astrakhan region. By the end of the year, the construction of sewage treatment facilities, production building, boiler rooms, office building, warehouse area, greenhouse, and equipment repair zone is planned to be completed. The company has already planted "Heinz" tomatoes on an area of 650 hectares and plans to harvest the first crop in July-August. After the plant is launched, it is planned to produce 230,000 tons of tomatoes and 28,000 tons of tomato paste annually.

The CEO of the company "Growth Technologies," Tamara Reshetnikova, notes that similar projects are needed in Russia, as a large part of tomato paste is still imported, especially from China. She also points out that the southern regions of Astrakhan, Saratov, and Samara are ideal for growing tomatoes in open field for industrial processing, as it is much cheaper than growing in greenhouses.

In the Soviet era, tomato paste was produced at domestic enterprises, but after the collapse of the USSR, vegetable production in open and closed fields significantly decreased. However, it can now be said that this industry is starting to recover, according to Reshetnikova. She also emphasizes the importance of self-sufficiency, as tomato paste has a long shelf life and is in high demand both in households and in industrial processing of fish, vegetables, and legumes.

The main challenge for such a enterprise is the lack of qualified personnel, Reshetnikova believes. She also points out issues with seeds, as foreign selection is purchased through "gray" imports due to requirements for localizing production in Russia, which is difficult and expensive for foreign companies. Russian producers still cannot meet all the requirements for industrial processing, including disease resistance, pests, taste qualities, and yield.

"Tomarina" will be the second tomato paste producer in the Astrakhan region. The first plant, "Astrakhan Canned Foods," produces over 80 types of fish, vegetable, and juice products. From 2023 to 2032, the launch of the "Tomarina" plant is planned, which will produce 29,000 tons of tomatoes. The "Agroinnovations Astrakhan" plant in the Enotayevsky district plans to increase tomato paste production volumes to 65,000 tons per year. The project's goal is to provide the Russian market with a self-sufficient amount of tomato paste.
