India has agreed to resume rice exports to Singapore, as announced by the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi.
"India and Singapore have a very close strategic partnership characterized by common interests, strong economic ties, and robust people-to-people links. Considering these special relations, India has decided to permit rice exports in accordance with Singapore's food safety requirements. Official documents regarding this matter will be issued shortly," the MEA spokesperson noted.
India is the world's largest rice exporter, accounting for approximately 40% of global rice trade. At the end of July, the Indian government banned the export of non-basmati white rice to increase domestic supply and control retail prices. White rice represents 25% of the total rice volume exported from India.
Shortly after this decision, Singapore, along with authorities from several other countries, requested India to resume rice exports.
In particular, Singapore requested around 110 thousand tonnes of rice from India. Earlier, the Singapore Food Agency stated that it was in talks with India to resume rice exports.
