On September 11, 2024, Russia harvested over 97 million tons of grain, including 72 million tons of wheat. This information was provided by the Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, Oksana Lut, during a meeting with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and members of the government.
"At the moment, the total area of grain crops in the country is about 33 million hectares, which is approximately 70% of the fields. The gross harvest today exceeds 97 million tons, of which 72 million tons are wheat," Lut reported.
She noted that 2024 turned out to be a challenging year for agricultural producers. "In the spring, several regions faced late frosts, followed by a drought that continues to this day, and then abundant precipitation during the harvest. Due to these weather anomalies, the harvesting campaign is taking place in a tense atmosphere. The Volga and Urals regions are behind schedule due to rains. The yield of grain in regions affected by frost and drought has decreased," the minister said.
Nevertheless, Lut pointed out that the quality of Russian grain in 2024 is significantly better than the previous year.
Forecast for grain harvest
According to the minister, despite all the difficulties, thanks to the high technology level of Russian agricultural producers, the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia promises a grain harvest of 132 million tons in 2024.
"We expect good results for oilseeds, sugar beets, vegetables, and potatoes," she added.
In 2023, the second largest grain harvest in Russia's history was achieved - about 143 million tons, including new regions - approximately 147 million tons.
At the end of May, the Deputy Chairman of the Russian government, Dmitry Patrushev, stated that the forecast for the grain harvest in Russia in 2024 remains at no less than 132 million tons, despite the frosts. According to him, this will allow exporting up to 60 million tons of grain in the new agricultural season.
