In the current year, the share of domestically bred sunflower on the spring sowing area will exceed 50%, according to the forecast presented at the "Where's the Margin 2025" conference organized by the Institute of Agricultural Market Conjuncture. Mark Gecht, managing partner of the company "Rusid," noted that this dynamics of import substitution is very optimistic. He added that they previously considered such indicators to be fantastic, but now they expect to achieve the goals set in the Food Security Doctrine by 2027, rather than by 2030, as the volume of imports of foreign breeding is constantly decreasing.
Artem Lukomets, chief research fellow of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution Federal Scientific Center All-Russian Research Institute of Oil Crops, clarified that in 2024, already 44% of sunflower seeds were of domestic breeding, compared to 23% in 2021. Gecht assessed the efficiency of Russian seeds, noting that they have passed the consumer denial stage. He also noted that the industry is at a phase where agricultural producers actively test various hybrids of domestic breeding, and Russian breeding companies are successfully expanding their presence and achieving good results.
These breeding achievements became possible thanks to the cooperation of science, the state, and business. Gecht noted that the state pays great attention to technological sovereignty, especially in the field of breeding and genetics. He emphasized that the quotas on importing foreign breeding are a powerful support for Russian producers. This allowed agricultural producers to pay attention to domestic breeding achievements and start using them.
One of the tasks for breeders for the next year is to create new varieties and hybrids adapted to the stresses and challenges that Russian agricultural producers face today. Gecht emphasized that previous years showed many risks that need to be addressed. It is important to create hybrids that are resistant to common diseases and adapted to climate change. He assured that they will actively engage in studying existing collections through phenotyping and genotyping. Gecht is confident that Russia already has enough genetic material to solve all possible breeding tasks.
According to the Federal Scientific Center All-Russian Research Institute of Oil Crops, domestic seeds already have a significant advantage - they are much cheaper than foreign ones. Lukomets noted that the less expenses the producer has, the higher the profit. At the same time, the yield increase from domestic hybrids also boosts the profit of agricultural producers by increasing the share of seeds of domestic breeding.
