In Russia, a quota on the import of chicken meat has been established, causing discontent in the industry, reports the National Poultry Union.
In 2024, Russia has established a quota for duty-free imports of chicken meat. This has caused a negative reaction in the industry, as only 7.6 thousand tons out of the total 140 thousand tons have been chosen so far. According to Sergey Lakhtyukhov, the CEO of the National Union of Poultry Farmers, the measure does not justify itself.

In 2024, a tariff quota of 140,000 tons of duty-free chicken meat imports was introduced in Russia. This decision has caused a negative reaction in the industry, as reported by Sergey Lakhchukhov, the general director of the National Poultry Farmers Union, at the "Agroinvestor: PRO Livestock and Compound Feeds" conference. He noted that the mistakes of previous years are being repeated once again, and this measure is not justified.
Lakhchukhov recalled that a few years ago, pig farmers faced a similar situation when import quotas were introduced. As a result, out of 100,000 tons, only about 15,000 tons were imported. A similar situation is happening now with chicken.
Despite the fact that duty-free meat imports are allowed for meat processors, only 7,600 tons out of the total quota of 140,000 tons have been chosen so far. There is information that this volume was chosen by enterprises in the Kaliningrad region, but they did not bring in anything additional and simply used this measure as part of their economic activities.
The decision to introduce a duty-free quota for chicken meat imports was made against the backdrop of rising prices in December 2023 in order to increase supply in the market and stabilize prices. According to the National Poultry Farmers Union, the wholesale price of broiler carcasses decreased by 3% in the week from April 1 to April 8, amounting to 161 rubles per kilogram. This is the first weekly price decrease of the year. The prices of other types of chicken meat have also decreased over the past month: the price of chicken fillet decreased from 298 rubles to 280 rubles per kilogram, and the price of chicken drumsticks dropped from 195 rubles to 182 rubles per kilogram.
