The forecast for sunflower harvest in the EU for 2024/25 has been reduced due to excess rainfall: 8.8 million tonnes, which is 11% lower than the previous year's level.

Experts have lowered the forecast for sunflower production in the EU for 2024/25 to 8.8 million tonnes due to excess rainfall, which will lead to a decrease in yield from 2.1 to 1.8 tonnes/ha.

The rapeseed harvest is estimated at 16.7 million tonnes from an area of 5.6 million hectares, while the soybean harvest is projected to be 2.9 million tonnes from an area of 1.1 million hectares.

Experts at Stratégie Grain have reduced their previous forecast for sunflower seed production in the European Union for the 2024/25 season to 8.8 million tonnes, which is 11% below the previous year's 2023/24 level of 8.9 million tonnes.

This downward revision is attributed to excess rainfall, especially in France, which is negatively affecting crop conditions and grain quality. It is expected that the average sunflower seed yield will be 1.8 tonnes per hectare, compared to 2.1 tonnes per hectare last year. Overall, the sunflower seed planting area in the EU for the 2024/25 season is expected to be 4.9 million hectares.

However, according to Stratégie Grain, the rapeseed production forecast for the EU in 2024 is 16.7 million hectares (-3.3% year on year) with a yield of 3 tonnes per hectare from a total area of 5.6 million hectares. Soybean cultivation, on the other hand, is expected to reach 2.9 million tonnes (+0.03%) with a yield of 2.6 tonnes per hectare from an area of 1.1 million hectares.
