Palm oil waste recycling: Malaysian company to build the world's first graphite plant for electric vehicles in Nevada.

Oil palm is used to produce graphite for electric vehicles. A Malaysian company is building a plant in Nevada that will produce graphite from agricultural waste, ensuring cleaner production. The plant will create over 500 jobs and reduce CO2 emissions.

The oil palm is no longer just extracting oil. For the first time, agricultural residues from palm oil production are being used to create graphite for electric vehicles.

A leading Malaysian company specializing in patented technologies for producing graphite and graphene from agricultural waste has announced plans to build a commercial graphite production plant for the automotive industry in Nevada, USA. This will be the first plant of its kind in the USA and in the world.

The Nevada plant will be able to utilize up to 30,000 tons of material similar to palm oil residues - one of the most widely available agricultural products in Malaysia, to produce up to 10,000 tons of battery-grade graphite annually. This will be sufficient for producing batteries for more than 100,000 electric vehicles per year. The new plant is expected to start operating in 2026.

In addition, the first commercial Graphjet plant in Malaysia, scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2024, will use palm kernel shells to produce solid carbon, which will be shipped to Nevada for faster graphite production.

"Our company is developing a unique technology for converting agricultural waste into graphite, and we aim to become a leading supplier of this material in the USA. We are very pleased to embark on our journey in Nevada. We look forward to investing in the region and creating numerous new jobs in the green energy sector, as we are building the first-of-its-kind next-generation graphite plant in the USA and worldwide," shared Aiden Lee, CEO and co-founder of Graphjet.

He also explained that the choice of Nevada as the plant's location is due to its strategic proximity to major battery and electric vehicle manufacturers who will require a large amount of graphite. The new production complex in Nevada will create over 500 highly skilled jobs, and the project investment is estimated to range from $150 to $200 million.

Graphjet Technology Sdn. Bhd. was founded in Malaysia in 2019 and specializes in the production of single-layer graphene and artificial graphite using oil palm kernel shells formed during palm oil production.

The company not only offers the most efficient way to process agricultural waste but also adds value for palm oil producers. Now, this crop is becoming a source not only of palm oil but also of environmentally friendly materials for graphite and graphene production in the global industry.
