As a result of outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in various states in the USA, the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) in Hong Kong has temporarily banned the import of poultry meat, eggs, and other poultry products from the USA.
This decision was made following a notification from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) about several cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza on commercial poultry farms in Minnesota, Iowa, and North Carolina.
Restrictions related to avian flu have already been imposed in 38 states in the USA, and multiple outbreaks among backyard poultry are observed in New Mexico, Minnesota, and Colorado. However, there is no complete information about the control and elimination measures of the outbreaks conducted by the American state veterinary service.
Since July 24, 2024, Rosselkhoznadzor has also imposed restrictions on the import and transit of all poultry products from the USA to Russia.
An official letter from the Service was sent to the Regional Manager for Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the European Union.
The imposed restrictions will not affect the Russian market, as poultry products from the USA have not been imported into Russia since 2014 due to an existing food embargo. However, American poultry products transit through the territory of the Russian Federation to other countries.
The following goods will be prohibited:
- live poultry and incubation eggs;
- poultry meat, ready-to-eat poultry products, and other poultry products containing processed poultry products, except for products processed in accordance with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) guidelines;
- poultry feed and additives (except for plant-based feeds and additives, as well as synthetic chemical and microbiological feeds and additives processed in compliance with OIE rules);
- used equipment for poultry handling, slaughter, and processing.
The issue of lifting the temporary restrictions will be considered by Rosselkhoznadzor after receiving full information on the elimination of avian flu outbreaks in the USA and conducting negotiations between Russian and American authorities.
