In the first half of 2024, the production volume of natural starches reached about 205.5 thousand tons, exceeding the figure for the same period last year (192 thousand tons). This information was reported by the Association of Grain Processing Enterprises "Soyuzkrakhmal." Within the country, there is a positive trend in the growth of production of most starch products, despite the challenges in the international market. Some product categories showed a minimal volume decrease, not exceeding 2-4%, indicating the stable operation of domestic enterprises.

The main sources of raw materials for starch production in Russia are corn, wheat, and potatoes. The largest production volumes are corn and wheat starches. In the first half of the year, the production volume of corn starch exceeded 172 thousand tons, which is 6% more than the previous year. The production volume of wheat starch was 23.7 thousand tons, which is 4% less than the period from January to June 2023.

The production volume of modified starches increased by 23% to almost 64.2 thousand tons. This growth is associated with increased production at companies like "Aston Krakhmalo-Produkty" (Ryazan region) by 200% and "Amilko" (Rostov region) by over 30%, as explained by "Soyuzkrakhmal." Also, in the first half of the year, the production volumes of potato starch increased by 18% - from 5.3 thousand tons the previous year to 6.3 thousand tons. "Mglinsky Krakhmal" (Bryansk region) and "Syryatinsky Krakhmal" (Nizhny Novgorod region) contributed to the growth in production volumes.

The production of saccharified starch products (starch syrups, maltodextrins, glucose-fructose syrups) continues to grow. In the first half of the year, the production volume of glucose-fructose syrups (GFS-30, GFS-42) was 147.2 thousand tons, compared to 142.4 thousand tons produced the previous year. The production of starch syrups increased by 2% to 246 thousand tons, mainly due to the development of the confectionery industry. The production volume of maltodextrins also significantly increased to 29.6 thousand tons, compared to 24.2 thousand tons in the first half of 2023. The main contribution to the volume increase was made by the company "NewBio."

The production of wheat gluten decreased from 42.5 thousand tons to 41.5 thousand tons, while the production of corn gluten increased from 26.8 thousand tons to 30.2 thousand tons. The increase in corn gluten production is due to the expansion of capacities at some enterprises and the improvement of their efficiency through the modernization of production line equipment, as explained by "Soyuzkrakhmal."

Despite all the technological and other challenges, in the first half of the year, 70.2 thousand tons of lysine were produced, which is almost 10 thousand tons more than in the first half of 2023. "Premix Plant No. 1" (Belgorod region) and "AminoSib" (Tyumen region) produce this amino acid in the form of L-lysine sulfate for the compound feed industry.
