The first rating of domestic sunflower varieties and hybrids in Russia plans to create a National Seed Alliance based on the results of joint tests with agricultural enterprises. This was announced at the “Field Day of the South of Russia” by a member of the alliance council, managing partner of the Rusid company, Mark Gecht.
“The situation in the industry is such that the selection policy needs to be changed, which is what the government is doing now. In order to accelerate the pace of foreign product substitution, Russia needs competitive varieties and technologies. The moment is most suitable, we already have successful developments, and in order to objectively evaluate and demonstrate their effectiveness, we propose to test domestic varieties and sunflower hybrids and, based on the results, create a National rating,” said Gecht.
According to him, both private selection and seed companies and scientific institutions can take part in the project. After completion of the tests, the best hybrids and varieties will be determined according to criteria such as yield, oil content, resistance to stress factors (climate, diseases).
The experiment involves the creation of standard technological maps for the cultivation of hybrids and varieties of sunflower. To ensure the objectivity of the ranking, the technique and preparations used will be the same.
