In Russia, there are plans to build two new citric acid production plants to meet the growing demand for the product.

In 2025, two new citric acid production plants will be launched in Russia. One will be located in the Tula Region, and the other in the Voronezh Region. A third plant will be opened in the Krasnodar Territory. The demand for citric acid in Russia is increasing due to the development of the food industry.

In the first half of 2025, two new plants specializing in citric acid production may appear in Russia. One of them will be located in the Special Economic Zone "Uzlovaya" in the Tula region. Its production capacity will be 20,000 tons of citric acid per year, and it will also produce polylactic acid. The first phase of the launch is planned for the second quarter of 2025, and it is expected that the products will be supplied to the domestic market and the CIS countries.

The second plant, owned by the local company "Citron," is planned to be opened in the Voronezh region. Its production capacity will also be 20,000 tons of citric acid per year, and in addition to that, the plant will produce by-products and related products. The first production line, with a capacity of 10,000 tons, can be launched in the first quarter of 2025.

Another enterprise being built by the company "Rustark" in the Krasnodar region will have a production capacity of 88,000 tons of citric acid per year. Information about the start of construction was received in the autumn of 2023, but there is currently no data on the plant's launch date.

Currently, the Russian market needs 60-80,000 tons of citric acid annually, and the entire volume is imported from China. Citric acid is produced by the fermentation method from sucrose, fructose, glucose, starch hydrolysates, and molasses. It is widely used in the food industry as a preservative, antioxidant, and acidity regulator in the production of juices, jams, marmalades, and other citrus products, as well as in the production of confectionery, bakery products, beverages, ice cream, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

According to NilsenIQ data, confectionery products rank second in sales volume and are the fastest-growing segment of Russia's food market, with sales volume growing by 20.2% from January 2022 to January 2023.

Expert Leonid Khazanov believes that the citric acid market is stable and has a tendency to expand, indicating a high demand for the product.
