The latest report from Strategie Grains saw EU corn production forecast for 2023/24 rise by 400,000 tonnes on the previous month, endorsing estimates for France. Production is expected to be 61 million tons, higher than the season's 52.4 million tons.
Experts say the harvest is almost complete and there is a contrast between good yields in western and northern Europe and poor yields in the southeast.
In addition, heavy rain forecast for October has led to problems with winter grain planting next season (2024/25) across the European economy. The situation is particularly worrying in Western France, where expected harvest potential is likely to be missed.
In particular, the EU bread wheat planting area forecast has been reduced by .3 million hectares from the previous estimate to 21.5 million hectares (down from 21.7 million hectares in the previous season).
