Grain production forecast in Canada for 2024/25: an increase in wheat, barley, and corn harvest, but a decrease in canola.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada forecasts an increase in wheat production by 0.7 million tonnes in the fiscal year 2024/25, growth in domestic consumption and exports, as well as an increase in barley and corn production. However, the forecast for canola is lowered.

In the March report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), the forecast for wheat production in the country was increased by 0.7 million tonnes per month, reaching 34.6 million tonnes in the 2024/25 financial year (an increase of 2.6 million tonnes per year). The forecast for domestic grain consumption was also increased by 0.2 million tonnes, reaching 9.3 million tonnes (compared to 8.6 million tonnes in the previous season), as well as the export forecast by 0.2 million tonnes, reaching 24.6 million tonnes (compared to 23.5 million tonnes in the previous season). Ending stocks also increased by 0.8 million tonnes, reaching 4.4 million tonnes (compared to 3.6 million tonnes in the previous season). Durum wheat production is expected to be at 5.7 million tonnes (an increase of 0.3 million tonnes compared to the February forecast and 1.7 million tonnes compared to the previous season), with exports at 4.5 million tonnes (an increase of 0.1 million tonnes and 1.3 million tonnes respectively), and ending stocks at 0.8 million tonnes (an increase of 0.1 million tonnes and 0.3 million tonnes respectively). The barley crop forecast increased by 0.2 million tonnes, reaching 9.5 million tonnes (compared to 8.9 million tonnes in the previous season), and ending stocks increased by an equivalent volume to 1.3 million tonnes (compared to 1 million tonnes in the previous season). The corn production forecast has been raised by 0.6 million tonnes, reaching 14.9 million tonnes (compared to 15.1 million tonnes in the previous season), and the forecast for domestic consumption has also increased by 0.3 million tonnes, reaching 15.1 million tonnes (compared to 15.7 million tonnes in the previous season), with ending stocks also growing by 0.3 million tonnes, reaching 2.2 million tonnes (compared to 1.9 million tonnes in the previous season). Regarding oilseed crops, it is worth noting a decrease in the canola production forecast by 0.3 million tonnes, reaching 18.1 million tonnes (an increase of 0.2 million tonnes per year). Oilseed consumption is expected to be at 0.9 million tonnes, with ending stocks at 1.7 million tonnes.
