A new system for assessing malting barley varieties for agricultural industry professionals in Russia

The dependence on imported brewing barley in seed farming reaches 100%. Igor Lobach, the chairman of the "National Seed Alliance" association, calls on Russia to create its own barley quality assessment system in order to use domestic varieties. Dependence on a foreign assessment system is a problem. Developing our own system will help develop local seed farming and strengthen the position of Russian brewers.

Dependence on imports in the malting barley seed growing segment reaches 100%. Russia should create its own system for assessing the quality of barley varieties in order to gradually introduce domestic varieties into production. This was stated by Igor Lobach, chairman of the board of the National Seed Alliance (NSA) association, at a press conference dedicated to the situation in seed production.

Currently, Russian brewers mostly depend on the European system for assessing the quality of malting barley varieties. Foreign companies fully control the situation with seed production of malting barley. The process is as follows: first, a barley variety is developed and entered into the European register, and then submitted for technological and quality testing. Special structures evaluate the variety and give a conclusion on its suitability for use in brewing. If a variety is not approved, breweries, especially those exporting their products, cannot use that variety.

This dependence on a foreign quality assessment system is a problem for domestic malting barley seed production. Russia needs its own assessment system, which will be based on the special needs and requirements of the national market. This will allow the development of local seed production and the creation of new barley varieties suitable specifically for Russian brewers.

One of the main aspects of creating such a system is conducting technological and quality tests. They will help determine the compliance of barley varieties with the standards and requirements of domestic beer producers. It is also important to take into account the needs of the market, including the taste preferences of buyers and beer consumption in different regions of Russia.

Creating our own system for assessing the quality of barley varieties will not only reduce dependence on imports, but also contribute to the development of domestic beer production. Russian brewers will be able to use barley varieties that best suit their needs and consumer preferences. This could contribute to the growth of the domestic brewing industry and strengthen the competitiveness of Russian brewers in both domestic and international markets.

In general, the creation of our own system for assessing the quality of malting barley varieties is an important step for the development of the domestic seed industry. This will allow Russia to become more independent from imports, strengthen the position of domestic beer producers and contribute to the development of the entire industry as a whole.
