In the case of some crops, dependence on foreign seeds is more than 90%.
The agro-industrial complex of the Rostov region is still dependent on foreign seed suppliers. This applies to crops such as corn, sunflowers, vegetables and sugar beets. This was stated by Deputy Minister of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture Dmitry Repka in an interview with RBC.
- To be specific, in corn up to 40% of the crop is imported seeds, in sunflower - 60%. In vegetable crops and sugar beets, imports account for more than 90%, Repka said.
The problem has been known for a long time: back in November 2022, the regional government promised a subsidy program for scientific institutions involved in seed breeding. Then they announced a shortage of domestic seeds for only two items - corn and sunflower.
