On Wednesday, the May futures for world sugar No. 11 in New York (SBK24) closed down by 0.20 points (-0.89%), while the May futures for London white sugar ICE No. 5 (SWK24) closed down by 7.80 points (-1.19%).
Prices for sugar on Wednesday showed a moderate decrease due to the increase in sugar production in Brazil. The company Unica reported that sugar production in the Center-South region of Brazil in the first half of March amounted to 64,000 tons, which is 313% more than the same period last year. In addition, sugar production in Brazil in marketing year 2023/24 by mid-March increased by 25.8% compared to the previous year, reaching 42.245 million tons. Brazilian sugar mills increased the processing of sugarcane to obtain more sugar and less ethanol. This year, mills processed 48.96% of the total sugarcane volume for sugar production, which is 3.03% more than last year.
