According to China's General Administration of Customs, the country imported 6.19 million tons of corn in the first two months of this year, up 178% from the same period last year. Of this volume, 4.1 million tons came from Brazil.
Brazil has become the main supplier of corn to the Chinese market, displacing the United States. In the first two months of this year, the United States supplied only 766.99 thousand tons of corn to China, which is 67% less than a year earlier.
The increase in Brazilian corn exports is due to increased production and logistical advantages. In addition, Brazil is interested in exporting through the Chinese-controlled port of Chancay in Peru, which would allow Brazilian exporters to ship goods to other Asian countries across the Pacific Ocean, cutting transit times in half.
