In 2023, Moldova can harvest more than 2 million tons of corn, which is almost three times higher than last year's figure. This forecast was voiced by State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Sarban, RadioMoldova reports.
Also, according to the official, an increase in the gross harvest of a number of other crops is expected - sunflower, soybean, sugar beet.
“As for corn, 484 thousand hectares have been sown and we expect a harvest of 2.1 million tons. We have 388 thousand hectares of sunflower, from which, according to our estimates, 785 thousand tons will be harvested. As for sugar beets, there are almost 11,000 hectares of them, and we plan to harvest 660,000 tons of root crops. 25 thousand hectares are allocated for soybeans, from which about 55 thousand tons will be harvested,” V. Sharban specified.
It should be noted that, according to the estimates of the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2022, the corn crop in Moldova amounted to 705 thousand tons, sunflower - 622 thousand tons, soybeans - almost 31 thousand tons, sugar beet - 382 thousand tons.
