UK winter wheat harvest breaks 5-year record

The wheat harvest in the UK for the 2023/24 season has been completed on 89% of the planned area, exceeding the levels of the past 5 years. Grain yields range from 7.8 to 8.2 tons per hectare, surpassing the average level. The harvesting of barley and canola has also been completed.

According to the monitoring data of the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), as of August 29, harvesting of winter wheat of the 2023/24 crop was carried out on 89% of the planned areas. This is higher than the result of the last 5 years (82%).

It is noted that the drier weather over the past two weeks has made it possible to achieve good results. Thus, the yield of harvested grain ranges from 7.8 t/ha to 8.2 t/ha, which is higher than the average level of recent years.

In addition, the country has completed the harvest of winter barley with an average yield of 6.2 t/ha to 9 t/ha. As of the reporting date, 59% of the planned areas were threshed under spring barley (63% - on average over the last 5 years) with a yield of 5.5-5.9 t/ha.

In parallel, harvesting of rapeseed has been completed, the yield of which is estimated at 2.8-3 t/ha. Lower-than-expected oil yields are due to locally unfavorable weather conditions and significant pest damage to crops in some regions.
