Morocco's National Office of Cereals and Legumes (ONICL) has announced subsidies for the import of soft milling wheat from 1 to 30 September. The subsidy amount will be 17.2 dirhams per 1 quintal ($16.9 per ton). This was reported by the Zerno On-Line agency.
According to USDA estimates, this season's wheat harvest in Morocco was 4.2 million tons, which is more than last season's dry season (2.7 million tons), but less than the five-year average (4.9 million tons).
Wheat stocks in Morocco at the beginning of the current season fell to 1.5 million tons, which is less than last season (2.4 million tons) and the five-year average (3.6 million tons).
Due to insufficient supply of wheat on the domestic market, Morocco may increase its imports to a record 7 million tons, the US Department of Agriculture predicts.
