A long spring only causes short disruptions in the sowing schedule. Overall, the situation is assessed as "satisfactory".

The Roshydrometcenter reported that in May Russia was hit by cold weather and frosts, which had a negative impact on the sowing of agricultural crops. Nevertheless, overall the condition of the crops is assessed as good.

In the southern regions of the country, the sowing of crops is almost completed, however, the lack of precipitation hinders their growth. The forecast for the end of May promises warm and dry weather, which is favorable for sowing in most regions.

According to the data from Roshydromet

European Part

In the second half of the second decade of May, most regions of the European part of Russia experienced cold weather, with temperatures 3–6° below average. However, in the western parts of the Leningrad, Pskov regions, and the Republic of Karelia, it was a few degrees warmer.

In the first half of the decade, there were frosts (from -5 to -1°) almost everywhere in the Central, Volga, and Northwestern Federal Districts. This adversely affected the agrometeorological conditions for sowing and crop emergence. The Ulyanovsk region reported crop losses of wheat, sunflower, and other agricultural crops over a large area. The Penza region also faced crop losses of sugar beets and other crops. In the Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod regions, Perm Krai, Chuvash Republic, and Tatarstan, damage to grains and grasses was noted.

In the second half of the decade, frosts were observed only in the east of the Northwest region, as well as in the northern and eastern areas of the Volga Federal Districts. The rest of the territory became warmer, improving sowing conditions. Precipitation was insignificant and had almost no impact on sowing. However, by the end of the decade, a lack of rainfall left the topsoil dry, adversely affecting crop emergence.

Winter and spring grains continued to grow. Sugar beets and sunflowers started leaf formation. Overall, the condition of agricultural crops was assessed as good or satisfactory.

Soil moisture was close to optimal in most regions. In the northern regions, the soil was oversaturated with moisture.

Southern and North Caucasus Federal Districts

In southern Russia, the sowing of crops, including heat-loving ones, was nearly completed in good conditions. Winter grains continued to grow, while spring grains and row crops developed well. Frost damage to grain and vegetable crops was observed in some areas of the Rostov, Volgograd regions, Crimea, and other regions.

In the Southern Federal District, Crimea, and the Lugansk People's Republic, most crops suffered from a lack of precipitation, creating unsatisfactory conditions for crop growth and development.

Asian Part

In the Ural Federal District, most areas experienced cool weather, with temperatures 2–4° below normal. Overall, the conditions for spring sowing were favorable, with a few days of complications due to rain and soil oversaturation. Morning frosts of -7…-3° hampered work.

In the Siberian Federal District, Buryatia, and the Zabaikalsky Krai, the weather was warm and precipitation was insignificant. Sowing operations started favorably. Temporary frosts of -3…-1° posed no threat.

In the northern part of the Far Eastern Federal District, spring crops continued to be sown, while the southern part of the Primorsky Krai began sowing crops. Conditions for sowing were good, except for a few days with frosts (-6…-1°) and rain, leading to soil oversaturation.

Forecast for the third decade of May 2024

European Part

Warm and dry weather is expected, favorable for spring sowing. In the Non-Black Earth and northern parts of the Black Earth zone, conditions for crop emergence and development will be good. However, in the Black Earth zone, especially in the south of Russia, drought is expected. In the Republics of the North Caucasus, soil oversaturation due to rain is possible.

Asian Part

Warmer weather is expected, creating favorable conditions for spring planting and the growth of winter crops. However, in Western Siberia and the Primorsky Krai, problems may arise due to soil oversaturation from rain.
