Iranian sugar refineries managed to produce 1.44 million tons of sugar from sugar beet and sugar cane in the previous Iranian calendar year 1401 (ended March 20), a spokesman for the country's Ministry of Agriculture said.
According to Peyman Hesadi, director of the Sugar Mills Project at the Ministry of Agriculture, given the climatic conditions and rains this year, production is also expected to reach at least this figure, according to IRIB.
"The country annually needs 2.2 million tons of sugar, and the rest of the necessary sugar has to be imported," Khesadi said.
