The USA, EU, Argentina, Canada, and China are the largest producers of alfalfa in the world. In Russia, alfalfa has not yet received proper recognition, but experts predict that by 2030, the export of this crop will increase to 100-120 thousand tons per year.
According to Rosstat estimates, in 2023, approximately 550 thousand hectares in Russia were occupied by alfalfa crops in various regions of the country, from the Northwest to the Far East. Additionally, there are already existing or in the implementation stage several enterprises engaged in alfalfa processing. They are located in the Tyumen region, European part of Russia, as well as in the Novosibirsk region, Zabaikalsky and Primorsky Krais.
However, only a few enterprises are engaged in alfalfa production for export in the Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Ulyanovsk regions, as well as in the Republics of Tatarstan and Mari El, and in the Krasnodar Krai. The production volumes at these enterprises are insignificant, and experts believe that the export indicators noticeably lag behind the potential.
