Imports of sunflower seeds to Russia are expected to decline by 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year, amounting to 20.1 thousand tons, according to forecasts. This decrease in imports is a reflection of negative trends in the industry that have been observed over the past few years.

From 2002 to 2014, imports of sunflower seeds increased almost 10 times, from 2.2 thousand tons to 21.9 thousand tons. However, after this there was a reduction, and from 2016 to 2020, the need for imports increased again to a maximum of 30.8 thousand tons. Then a new period of declining imports began.

Experts from a market analysis company note that the decrease in imports over the past two years is due to an increase in domestic production and improved product quality. This is a good signal for the industry, as domestic manufacturers have been able to increase their competitive advantages.

Over the past 20 years, Turkey and the United States have been key suppliers of sunflower seeds to Russia, accounting for more than half of total imports. France and Spain contributed at 13% and 10% respectively. However, in 2023 the share of supplies from Turkey has increased significantly, amounting to 52%. This indicates a strengthening of the position of Turkish manufacturers in the Russian market.

Analysts report that imports of sunflower seeds from Moldova, Georgia, France, Romania and Hungary are expected to decline. This may be due to changes in the preferences of Russian consumers in favor of local products or to changes in the pricing policy and competitiveness of these countries in the market.

Important attention should be paid to the situation with prices for sunflower seeds. Given the reduction in imports, prices on the market may increase. This may have an impact on the cost of the final product and possibly affect customer demand.

Overall, the reduction in sunflower seed imports to Russia in 2023 is a reflection of changes in the industry. Strengthening domestic production and increasing product quality have a positive effect on the development of the industry. Also, a significant increase in supplies from Turkey indicates the importance of this partnership and opportunities for further development of cooperation. However, changes in imports from other countries may impact market competition and prices, requiring careful analysis and strategic planning by the industry.
