Russia has banned the import of peanuts due to the detection of a dangerous pest: the multicolored Asian lady beetle from Argentina.

Scientists have discovered the multicolored humpback fly in products from Argentina in Russia, which can cause harm. A shipment of 25 tons of peanuts was banned, and disinfection was carried out. The fly is considered a dangerous quarantine pest.

The results of the laboratory studies conducted by scientists from the St. Petersburg branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Grain Quality Assessment Center" confirmed the presence of a quarantine object - the scuttle fly (Megaselia scalaris (Loew)) - in the products from Argentina that are under quarantine.

To prevent the spread of this quarantine object on the territory of the Russian Federation, the release of a 25-ton batch of peanuts was prohibited. It was decided to conduct quarantine phytosanitary disinfection of the infected products.

Food for thought:

The scuttle fly (Megaselia scalaris (Loew)) is a highly dangerous quarantine pest, which is listed among the quarantine objects of the Eurasian Economic Union that are absent on the territory of the Russian Federation.

This pest is capable of spreading rapidly, moving through transportation, with the help of people, or animals. Adult individuals can act as carriers of cholera. The larvae of the scuttle fly pose a threat to both humans and animals, and can also lead to spoilage of various food products.
