Iran plans to become self-sufficient in wheat production by 2025, eliminating the need for imports.

Iran plans to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat by March 2025, by discontinuing its import. Last year, the country produced 10.5 million tons and imported 1 million tons of wheat. Russia is the main wheat supplier to Iran, as the country aims to become independent from imports.

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Iran, Alireza Mohajer, stated that the country will be able to self-sustain its wheat needs and does not plan to import it until March 2025. Last year, Iran produced 10.5 million tons of wheat and imported only 1 million tons. This year, they will be able to fully meet their wheat needs and stop importing it. Mohajer also noted that the government will make efforts to address the issue of reducing agricultural lands, which is a major problem in the country's agro-industry.

Currently, Russia is the main wheat supplier to Iran. Every year, Iran imports between 2.5 to 3 million tons of wheat from Russia. This is due to the fact that it is not feasible to cultivate many cereal crops in the republic due to the arid climate. However, Iran aims to increase its own wheat production and become fully independent from imports. According to the Grain Exporters' Union, Iran is among the top 5 importers of Russian grain. The total export volume of Russian wheat this season reached 38.5 million tons, which is 23% higher than the previous year.
