With reference to the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade of the country, the OleoScope portal reports that Egypt intends to purchase over 5 million tons of wheat through international tenders by GASC this year.
According to Noman Nasr Noman, an advisor to the head of the ministry, the annual domestic wheat consumption exceeds 20 million tons. While the total production volume is just over 9 million tons, wheat imports by the state and the private sector amount to 11 million tons.
He also noted that the share of wheat imports by the private sector increased by 10% to 55%, while the share of government imports stands at 45%.
Last year, Egypt acquired around 4.5 million tons of wheat through GASC tenders. This volume included nearly 3 million tons from Russia, 780 thousand tons from Romania, 360 thousand tons from France, 270 thousand tons from Bulgaria, and 120 thousand tons from Ukraine.
