Without subsidies, growing sunflowers in Kazakhstan threatens the workload of creameries

Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Serik Zhumanagarin has announced that oil refineries are operating at less than half of their capacity. Without subsidies for sunflower cultivation, the utilization of the plants will drop to 20%. In 2023, only 2 billion tenge out of 9.3 billion tenge was allocated for subsidizing oilseed crops. Measures are needed to support the development of the industry.

At a meeting in the government, Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin said that the butter factories currently operating in Kazakhstan are operating at less than half of their production capacity.

Moreover, without subsidizing sunflower cultivation, the utilization of these factories will drop to only 20%. He also indicated that of the total amount of subsidies allocated in 2023 to support the production of priority crops in a total of 9.3 billion tenge, only 2 billion tenge were provided for oilseeds. Of all the regions, only Kostanay, Almaty and Zhetysu regions received funds to subsidize sunflower, while the Turkestan region allocated funds to subsidize the cultivation of safflower.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the amount of funds for subsidizing sunflower cultivation will remain at approximately the same level next year. He also noted that in the coming years, new sunflower processing facilities are planned to be launched in the regions. Due to the low utilization of existing factories and without subsidizing the cultivation of raw materials, the situation requires attention and the adoption of appropriate measures to support and develop the industry.
